Fin che Omero Sofocle e Virgilio nell'età pagana e Dante e Shakespeare nella cristiana rimangono i grandi poeti delle genti quando nella travagliosa civiltà nostra, a rappresentare di essa le idee più speciali e proprie, il Goethe e lo Shelley chiedono al medioevo e all' an tichità, più assai che i simboli, le forme; non può, credo, esser recata in dubbio la superiorità, in poesia, della rappresentazione del passato.
